How's it looking for the Spring trail ride in a couple of weeks?

It's looking great! With only a couple of work days completed, much of the down timber is cut out on the trails across the bridge from the large campground. It's dry down there and the Zumbro pretty well stayed within it's banks this spring so not much to contend with in the bottoms. Elms continue to die and fall across the trail and boxelders likewise. The DNR is working on some of the eroded trails to fix them within a week or two. Dust control was put down on the main campground roads (GECC expenditure of nearly $2000) so we think we're rapidly getting all systems in shape. The last of the road construction is underway on the drive out from Theilman, mostly ditch work along the road. County road #4 from Lake City to Hwy 60 (leads into Theilman) is closed but a detour is posted. It just means more gravel so plan accordingly if you come from that way.

More info on the County Road 4 detour, provided by Milo:
County road #4 from Lake City south to Hwy 60 is closed due to resurfacing. While a detour is provided, it's a pretty poor gravel road so should be avoided. A suggested alternative coming from the north on Hwy 61 would be to take Hwy 63 south at Lake City, stay left onto County road #2 a few miles south of Lake City, and follow that to Hwy 60. Turn left on 60 until you get to county road #4, turn right and follow that into Theilman.

That info is also posted on our Trail Ride webpage.

The trails were great. Thanks to the club of for putting in all the work. It's a 4 hour drive for us down in Iowa, but worth it.

We are having a late spring, however there was not much for flooding in the bottoms this year. We are getting some rain, but not big rains. If we get some sun I think the bottoms will shape up quickly. We have almost a month for things to dry out.

Hopefully the big rains stay away. I'll be watching the weather channel.

Great turnout for workdays so far! Virtually all trails have been worked on and opened, more to do but first pass completed. Some reroutes on the bottoms left to be done as a result of huge flood last fall leaving trees and sand everywhere. Optimism reigns!

The trails were ready for our 2011 Theilman Trail ride and light sprinkle Friday night didn't cause any serious problems. The thunderstorm that rolled through late morning Saturday did cause many riders to have problems getting back to camp. More rain on Saturday night and a forecast of more rain on Sunday caused the GECC to cancel Sunday's riding. It was a tough decision to make but in the end it was well received by the majority of the riders there and even those arriving Sunday morning. A refund was offered but many riders refused to accept it, leaving it as a donation instead. Off roaders are truly a great bunch of folks!
Lots of trail repair done on Sunday and again on Monday. The DNR trails rep came down on Monday and inspected the trails with us. They were very complimentary to us for closing trails on Sunday due to the wet conditions and thought we had been successful in leaving the majority of the trails in better condition than they were before our event! Part of the problem with those trails across the bridge from the campground was the contractor not finishing his work last fall. They were supposed to have gravel installed on those gnarly, slippery, slimey, sticky clay uphills that had so many riders struggling. He will be back to repair those and put his gravel on them so they will be repaired with more equipment than we can muster.
We did manage to get through most of the bottoms with ATVs and drags but they can still use some work when the rains stop.
The understanding from the disappointed riders on Sunday morning is greatly appreciated by the GECC. We're planning for a better stretch of weather this fall!
